Why the Life-Changing Benefits of BHRT Are Finally in the Spotlight
Let’s be frank. Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy for women has endured bad press in the recent past, largely due to a 2002 study – the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) – which reported the now-debunked fears that BHRT was linked to breast cancer.
The impact of this WHI statement was big. The press seized on misinformation and the public was alarmed. Tragically, it meant that millions of women were not prescribed BHRT as a result, because of clinical misinterpretation and myths that were cultivated at that time.
In fact, there was no causative link and the benefits of BHRT can be life-changing. In short, it’s time to sort out the myths from the facts.

BHRT and Breast Cancer
An article published in The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism in 2013 indicated that contrary to the flawed WHI findings that BHRT per se increased the risk of breast cancer; treating women solely with estrogen actually caused breast cancer rates to decline.
The study also sought to give some perspective to the WHI report that taking estrogen plus progestin (E+P) increased the risk of breast cancer. The article laid many fears to rest by lending some context here – that the risk was no more than that associated with examples such as being obese or working as a flight attendant.
Bio-Identical Progesterone vs. Synthetic Progestins
There is another key factor to note: synthetic steroid hormones were used in the WHI study. A meta-analysis of investigations into plant-derived, bio-identical progesterone vs. synthetic progestins found that progesterone had a lower risk of breast cancer than its synthetic counterpart.
“Evidence suggests that there are important differences in breast cancer risks with different progestogens used in combined [oestrogen + progestogen] bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) regimens; micronized natural/bio-identical progesterone appears to be a far safer choice than synthetic progestins.”
